Descripción

Château Lynch-Bages es el vino top de la maison homónima, propiedad de Jean-Michel Cazes, catalogada como quinto Grand Cru Classé en la clasificación oficial de 1855. Se trata de un burdeos de estilo clásico y equilibrado que busca la elegancia en el coupage clásico de la región. Esta añada 2023 muestra ya un excelente potencial a juicio del crítico James Suckling, quien destaca su verticalidad, longitud y multitud de capas envueltas aromas a moras, cerezas y grafito. 

La entrega de este vino está prevista entre los meses de septiembre de 2025 y marzo de 2026.

Viñedo y elaboración

Descripción
Viñedo ubicado al sur y suroeste de Pauillac. La combinación de la barrera natural que supone el bosque de Las Landes y la proximidad del océano Atlántico y del estuario del Gironda influyen decisivamente en la regulación de las temperaturas en la zona creando un microclima muy específico.

El ciclo correspondiente a la añada 2023 vino marcado por el tiempo cambiante requiriendo la rápida adaptación a éste de los viticultores a fin de proteger las viñas ante estas condiciones complejas e inestables. Y es que el invierno, si bien fue en líneas generales suave, también presentó episodios de sequía que luego dieron paso a las lluvias, con el consiguiente riesgo de plagas. Aún así, todas las variedades alcanzaron una maduración óptima, destacando la excepcional calidad de la Cabernet, que aún exhibiendo uvas más pequeñas vio acentuada su concentración.

47 hectolitros por hectárea.
Cosecha
Vendimia manual efectuada del 13 de septiembre al 2 de octubre.
Vinificación
Nada más llegar a la zona de recepción, las uvas se despalillaron y se seleccionaron manualmente de nuevo, ya por tercera vez, en mesas vibratorias. A continuación pasaron por gravedad primero a minicubas de siete hectolitros y luego a cada depósito sin necesidad de bombeo. Adaptación precisa del proceso de vinificación al mapeo intraparcela del viñedo en 80 cubas isotérmicas cónicas de nueva generación con control de temperatura individual y bombas especialmente adaptadas a las operaciones de remontado facilitando la extracción de taninos.
Envejecimiento
Se prevé una crianza de 18 meses en barricas de roble francés, el 75% nuevas.

Opinión de los críticos

James Suckling:

Blackberry, black cherry, crushed stone and graphite. Lead pencil, too. It’s full-bodied with juicy, chewy tannins. Vertical and layered with lovely length. Quite plush. Chewy tannins at the end. Cabernet sauvignon driven. Showing excellent potential.

Decanter:

Weighty and ripe, but high toned and sharp, a real push pull of tannins, concentrated fruit and acidity. Feels very complete, not necessarily all in harmony right now, this is quite intense, but there’s a statuesque element which is impressive. Both rich and cool with liquorice, graphite, plum, cherry and cranberry. Layers of freshness and a real sense of classicism makes you want to go back for more. More lean and streamlined than 2022, this is focussed and there is bite and edge to the tannins that will settle, but this is very good. 65% grand vin, 25% second wine, 10% third wine. 6% press wine. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend.

The flagship 2023 Château Lynch-Bages is based on 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, resting in 75% new French oak. One of the biggest, richest wines in the vintage, it’s deep purple-hued and offers up some classic Lynch richness in its smoky black fruits, smoked earth, graphite, and tobacco-driven aromatics. These carry to a full-bodied Pauillac with ample mid-palate depth, ripe, building tannins, and a great finish. While it's clearly in the lively, fresher style of the vintage, it's a serious, structured, incredibly impressive Pauillac with tons to love. It's not far off the style of the 2019.

Falstaff:

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening on the rim. A hint of mint, dark cherries, some cassis, inviting, very typical bouquet. Juicy, complex, ripe dark forest berries, vivid, ripe tannins, fine fruit expression, some nougat, complex style, shows length and certain ageing potential.

Bettane et Desseauve:

Grande robe bleu nuit, corps considérable, tannins sans astringence, texture veloutée, tout en profondeur, peut-être un peu moins réactif que quelques pairs dans le retour de fraîcheur propre aux cabernets du millésime.

The Wine Advocate:

As usual one of the chunkier, broader-shouldered wines of the Médoc, the 2023 Lynch-Bages exhibits aromas of dark berries and cassis mingled with pencil shavings, licorice and pipe tobacco, framed by creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, it's deep, concentrated and generously extracted, with plenty of youthfully chewy tannin to carry it along in the cellar. The 2023 is a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.
