Montes Obarenes 2015

Candied pear and melon with gently spicy aromas, as well as dried lemon peel. Nice, supple and fleshy, medium-bodied palate with white apricots and pears. Drink now.
Ripe stone fruit and citrus characters characterise both the nose and palate. Has real life and elegance despite high alcohol. Bravo.
I was really looking forward to the 2015 Montes Obarenes, one of the finest modern whites from Rioja, a wine that has been a revelation since the initial 2013 vintage. They want to recreate the great traditional whites, using traditional varieties in search of a wine that can develop in bottle. They have added Tempranillo Blanco to the blend (25%, and the rest is Viura), and they have used lees and a combination of new barrique and egg-shaped concrete vats. I see this in the style of Plácet (from Palacios Remondo) or Añasdas Frías (from Pujanza). It has spicy and leesy notes, moderate alcohol and a fresh palate with a tasty, almost saline note and the limestone-textured tannins. It still feels very young and undeveloped. 3,607 bottles and 200 magnums were filled in June 2017. I'm looking forward to the cooler 2016 vintage, which is fresher, more mineral and vibrant, potentially their finest vintage that I could preview and had been in bottle for a while but won't be released yet, as the 2015 is arriving in the market now.
