Viñedo y elaboración

Clima

James Suckling:

Complex and deep with blackcurrants, voluptuous sweet berries, olives, cocoa powder and cigar box. This is not shy of Chile cabernet’s signature gooseberry, racy tomato-leaf and red chili-pepper notes, too. Still quite nuanced, with a medium to full body, filled with juicy, silky tannins. Extremely refined and long with some truffles and creamy, dark chocolate in the finish, which lasts over a minute. 78% cabernet sauvignon and 22% cabernet franc. Already deliciously drinkable now, but can hold.

Decanter:

Ripe fruit and chocolate powder on the nose with a touch of dried herbs and beautiful violet and peony floral scents. Fresh and lively, high acidity makes the mark at first balanced by creamy and liquorice-edged raspberry, strawberry and blueberry fruits giving a mixture of sharpness but also bounce by the cushioning tannins. Richly textured, layered and well constructed with energy and lift. Smooth and likeable with a juicy core and appealing red fruit flavours alongside sticky liquorice, sweet oak and smokey earth. New to the Place de Bordeaux this year and the youngest estate from Chile to list a wine with the distribution network. Vik was founded by Alex and Carrie Vik in 2006 in Millahue, in the Cachapoal Valley. The 2019 is a base of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Cabernet Franc, aged for 20 months in French oak barrels and for six months in 'Barroir' barrels toasted with oak from the estate. Chief winemaker Cristian Vallejo for the 2019 vintage.

Wine Enthusiast:

Made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes from the beautiful Millahue Valley, this is a wine with elegant silky tannins. Rich notes of oak add layers of flavor to its complexity. Red berries and hints of chocolate nib blend with sweet spices on the firm midpalate. The leafy finish is long and delightful. -Jessica Vargas

The Wine Advocate:

A blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Vik fermented after a cold soak, went through malolactic in barrel and matured for 26 months in French oak barrels, 55% of them new. It has 14.7% alcohol, a little riper than the 2018 I tasted next to it, and also kept some residual sugar, 3.59 grams. 2019 was a warmer and drier year than 2018, and the wine is a little more closed and less aromatic. The wine is full-bodied with generous tannins and some oak-related flavors that might need a little more time in bottle. It finishes quite dry, and the sugar is not noticeable. 25,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2020.
