Descripción

La proximidad de las viñas con el viejo Camino Real inspiró su nombre. Y anclada en la misma tierra, integrada en el Cerro de la Mesa, se erige una monumental tina de cerca de 30.000 metros, el edificio Viña Real. Pagos de Viña Real nace con la vendimia 2001, dado el excepcional estado del viñedo y es que la Tempranillo con el que se elabora procede de los mejores pagos de la bodega en Rioja Alavesa. Es además un vino que se recomienda tomar sin maridaje, para apreciar su variedad aromática.

Produced with grapes from their La Romera vineyard in the village of Labastida, the 2018 Pagos de Viña Real is pure Tempranillo. It's from a plot of almost two hectares planted 40 years ago on clay and stony (boulder) soils at the foot of the Toloño Mountain, and they wanted the wine to reflect the expression of the place rather than the fruit. It fermented in small vats with indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic and aging with lees in 300-liter French oak barrels. This is also a completely different wine from the previous vintages, now only from a specific vineyard and with less oak than in the past. It still has some grainy tannins that need polishing. It's full-bodied and has some rusticity that might require some time in bottle. 2,800 bottles were filled in November 2019.

Pagos is the most ambitious wine in the Viña Real range, produced entirely from Tempranillo vineyards that are over 40 years' old. Aged in new French oak, it's rich, dense, concentrated and quite tannic, with layers of inky, dark berry fruit and overlay of mocha and Asian spices.
