Entre 1979 y 1981, Quinta Nova da Nossa Senhora do Carmo y el Ministerio de Agricultura portugués se aliaron para llevar a cabo un estudio de las tres variedades principales de Douro. De este modo, estudiaron las variedades en diversas parcelas, con diferentes suelos y exposiciones. Este vino es el resultado de ese estudio, combinando las parcelas 28, con cepas viejas de Tinta roriz, y 21, de viñedos centenários en los que hay diferentes variedades imposibles de reconocer por completo. Lo que obtenemos es un vino que es un verdadero referente de ese Douro antiguo y autentico. Estructurado, pleno, y austero, pero muy seductor con sus matices de frutas azules y especias. Una delicia que habla de su tierra, de su gente y de su historia como pocos.

The 2019 Vinha Centenária Referência P28/P21 is predominantly Tinta Roriz (75%), with the rest a field blend from centenarian vines that have an emphasis on Donzelinho Tinto (about 8% of the 80 some varieties). It was all aged for 12 months in new French oak and comes in at 14.6% alcohol. This has more tannic pop than the Touriga Nacional in this report but equally expressive fruit, if not the same aromatics and sexy blue fruits. Pick 'em, because they are both exceptional. I'd give the edge to this, but it depends on what you like. The grip on the finish laces the beautiful fruit onto your palate. It lingers a long time. Expect this to age for a couple of decades, maybe more, but it is not drinking too badly now. We will see if this or the Touriga wins in the end.
Aromas of smoked plums, dark spices, chocolate and tar. Medium- to full-bodied with grippy tannins and a dusty mouthfeel. Slightly chewy and toasty with spices and nut shell undertones. Drink or hold.
While there are many old vineyards in the Douro, few can lay claim to a century of growth. This dense and properly concentrated wine is impressive. It has weight and many complex layers of black fruits and tannins. It certainly needs more aging. Drink from 2025. Parcels 28 and 21.
