Scala Dei Heretge 2016

The oldest winery in Priorat, Cellers de Scala Dei are known for bottling the first Priorat wine in 1878, and their remarkable cellars date back to the 17th century, where they were created by Carthusian monks. Re-established and refurbished in 1974 when they bottled some of the first modern day Priorat wines, Cellers de Scala Dei is today part of the Raventós Codorníu Group. The Heretge is 100% Cariñena, sourced from vines over 80 years old from three different 'costers' (slopes). A limited production of 3,000 bottles, the Heretge sees 16 months of oak ageing before release. Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW: Restrained, with some meaty notes. Powerful, with well rounded and tight tannins, leading to an open and expressive finish. Typical Carignan, with remarkable length. Simon Field MW: Dark density, notes of prune, figs and blueberry. The palate is leathery, imnposing and powerful; fine balanced acidity and a savoury depth. Sarah Jane Evans MW: Deep purple pink colour with exceptional floral aromatics. Palate is a sunburst of flavour. Vivid, punchy, fine rasp of tannin, savoury, almost salty finish. Very individual and memorable; this is a place that makes Cariñena great. Drinking Window 2019 - 2025
The new single-vineyard Cariñena 2016 Heretge was sourced from old vines from neighboring villages, three slopes ("costers") between La Vilella Alta and Torroja. It fermented in open concrete vats with 30% full clusters, alternating pigéage with remontage, and was pressed after 22 days in contact with the skins. It matured in a 4,000-liter French oak foudre for 16 months. It has the tree bark, licorice and graphite of the variety, with some dusty earthiness and ripe aromas and flavors. The palate reveals very good balance and freshness, with fine-grained tannins and an earthy finish. Quite a debut for Cariñena! 3,300 bottles were filled in March 2018. - Luis Gutiérrez.
I love the freshness of this focused, youthful Priorat red. Good concentration and beautifully integrated tannins make for a wonderful, velvety texture on the palate and promise long aging potential. Elegant, polished finish. Better from 2019.
