Scala Dei Massipa 2017

The white 2017 Massipa de Scala Dei has notes of pollen, beeswax and something mineral/diesel-like with a hint of camphor and yellow fruit. 2017 was an early harvest, but it lasted two months. Yields were low and grapes were healthy, and the Garnacha Blanca, which is 80% of the blend here, was harvested at the same time as the Chenin Blanc, which is the other 20% of the blend. It fermented in concrete with indigenous yeast and matured in oak foudre for one year. The oak is very nicely integrated—but it's there—and in a way, it reminds me of the traditional oak-aged whites from Rioja. The palate is very harmonious, with volume and freshness, ending dry and long. 2,200 bottles were filled in February 2019.
Fresh loquat, peach pit, apricots and green apples. The medium-bodied palate rides a beautiful balance between textured, oily stone fruit and forthright, cutting acidity. Drink now.
