Descripción

Escarpment es un lugar único en Martinborough, una larga y empinada pendiente al final de la planicie en la esquina sureste de la isla Norte. Esta es la región de Wairarapa, en pleno territorio māori, donde antiquísimos suelos aluviales recorren las tierras. El propósito de la bodega es mantener el equilibrio de los vinos que reflejan los atributos de esta isla tan especial, Aotearoa, “tierra de la gran nube blanca” como la conocen los maori.

Color rojo con gran intensidad.
Nariz
Aromas opulentos y vivos que seducirán a los amantes del Pinot noir. Frutas rojas y negras, cereza, grosella, frambuesa y ciruela madura combinadas con especias y notas florales.
Boca
Un tanino firme y una excelente textura redondean la fruta en el paladar.
Temperatura de servicio
Se recomienda servir a 16 ºC.
Consumo
Capacidad de envejecimiento de hasta 15 años.

Viñedo y elaboración

Descripción
Viñedo en pronunciada pendiente situado en las cercanías de Te Muna Road. Fue plantado al 100% con el clon Abel.
Edad
Plantado en 1999.
Clima
La añada 2020 fue prácticamente perfecta en términos de climatología, lo
que propició una uva de calidad excepcional que nos ha dado vinos
equilibrados y elegantes.
Vinificación
Fermentación en depósitos abiertos utilizando levaduras autóctonas. Remontados manuales una vez al día durante 25 días. Paso por prensa previo a la crianza.
Envejecimiento
Crianza de 16 meses en barricas de roble francés (35% nuevo).
Embotellado
No se procede a filtrado ni afinado al embotellar.

Opinión de los críticos

Wine Enthusiast:

This is a big, austere Pinot that needs time. At the moment, it shows vineyard-floor characters, along with mint, cedar, dark chocolate and toasty oak. The cherry and cranberry fruit is almost an afterthought. The palate is tightly wound in chiseled, chalky tannins. With time in glass to aerate, the tangy fruit creeps to the fore. Structured for the long haul, this should start to reveal more of its charms in another few years. Drink 2024–2034.

James Suckling:

Intensely spicy and perfumed with concentrated notes of purple plums, cherry stones, rosemary, neroli, cloves, cigar box and ground coffee. The tannins are firm and tightly-knit, providing a solid frame to the dark fruit. Sensual and distinctive. Try this from 2024. Screw cap.

The Wine Advocate:

The 2020 Kupe Pinot Noir is earthy and corporeal on the nose, with peat/undergrowth/lichen, a hint of black pudding, satsuma plum, black peppercorn and a hint of roast beef crust. I'm on and off this wine over the seasons, mainly due to the ripe/ribald fruit outlay; it can be such a big wine, and I tend to prefer the restraint of the Pahi or Te Rehua. However, this year it feels pretty balanced and in check, and the peaty character on the nose balances the fruit in the mouth, giving it an olive-green hue rather than brown or burgundy. Anyway, this is a lovely wine, showing well. 14.3% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
