The 2023 Ronca de Mazalba has to be the most impressive wine I've ever tasted from Méntrida proper. It comes from a single 1.3-hectare vineyard that was planted with Garnacha 40 years ago on sandy soils with silt and clay and has a south-facing exposition cushioned by the influence of a water stream nearby. It fermented with 100% full clusters and indigenous yeasts and had a long fermentation of 65 days, with very light pumping overs, just keeping the cap wet. The élevage was in used 500-liter French oak and lasted 10 months. It has notes of violet pastille, translucent berries, aromatic herbs and exotic spices; open and extroverted, it jumps from the glass and is showy and exuberant. The palate is medium-bodied, really fine-boned and fluid, with elegant and polished tannins as well as pungent, clean and precise flavors and a long, dry finish. This is truly amazing. Unfortunately, they only produced 600 bottles in this first vintage. It was bottled in July 2024.
